Types of Orthodontic Emergencies
Orthodontic treatment is an journey toward a healthier smile, but sometimes issues can arise along the way, and that's where emergency orthodontics can help. Knowing how to recognize and handle different types of orthodontic emergencies is crucial to keeping your treatment on track and protecting your oral health. At Hadavand Orthodontics, we are committed to educating our patients on what to do when something unexpected happens. Here’s what you need to know about the different types of orthodontic emergencies and how to respond to them appropriately.
Minor Orthodontic Issues You Can Handle at Home
Not every problem you encounter with your braces or appliances requires an immediate trip to the orthodontist. Some minor issues can be temporarily managed at home until your next scheduled appointment.
One common minor issue is a poking wire. As your teeth move and shift during treatment, the wires that connect your braces can sometimes shift and poke the inside of your cheeks or gums. If you experience a poking wire, you can use orthodontic wax to cover the sharp end and prevent irritation. In some cases, you may be able to gently push the wire back into place with a clean cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil.
Another minor issue is initial soreness after an adjustment. It's normal to experience tooth pain and tenderness for a few days following your orthodontic appointments. This discomfort usually subsides on its own and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and by sticking to softer foods. Rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater can also help alleviate irritation and discomfort.
Loose brackets or bands are also fairly common. If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, you can leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax if it is causing irritation. Always contact our office to let us know about the issue, but unless you are in significant discomfort, it usually doesn’t require an immediate visit.
Understanding how to manage these minor issues is an important part of navigating your orthodontic journey and practicing smart emergency orthodontics at home.
More Serious Issues Requiring an Urgent Orthodontic Visit
While many orthodontic problems can wait until your next appointment, there are times when you’ll need to schedule an urgent visit to your orthodontist.
One such situation is severe or worsening tooth pain. If you experience intense tooth pain that does not improve with over-the-counter medications or home care, it could be a sign of an underlying problem, such as an infection, and it’s important to contact Hadavand Orthodontics immediately.
Another serious issue is a broken appliance. If a bracket, band, or wire breaks in a way that causes significant pain, risk of injury, or prevents the appliance from functioning correctly, you should call our office right away. A broken expander, a completely detached bracket, or a snapped archwire can disrupt the course of your treatment and must be repaired promptly to avoid delays.
Additionally, if you notice significant swelling of the gums, face, or jaw, or if you develop a fever along with orthodontic discomfort, these could be signs of infection and warrant urgent care. Emergency orthodontics is designed to address these more critical issues quickly to protect both your oral health and your orthodontic progress.
Oral Injuries That Require an Emergency Room Visit
Sometimes, a dental emergency can be so severe that the first stop needs to be the emergency room, not the orthodontist’s office.
If you experience a serious injury to the mouth, jaw, or face — such as from a sports accident, fall, or other trauma — you should go to the emergency room immediately. Injuries that involve broken bones, deep cuts, heavy bleeding, or knocked-out teeth require urgent medical attention. Once your immediate medical needs are addressed and stabilized, you can then follow up with Hadavand Orthodontics to assess any impact the injury may have had on your braces or appliances.
It’s important to remember that while orthodontic emergencies can feel urgent, your health and safety come first. If you’re ever unsure about whether to head to the ER or call us, err on the side of caution and seek medical attention first.
